Noh, Shinnai, and Traditional Japanese Dance
Featuring easy-to-understand Noh and enjoyable shinnai

I. Renjishi: performed by Japanese traditional dancers
Performers: Hanayagi Kihi, Fujima Shinnosuke
This dance is based on Shakkyo, the kabuki version of a famous Noh play, in which a lion gives harsh training to his male pup, in order to toughen him.

II. Funa Benkei, performed in the Noh style.
Performers: Kawamura Haruhisa and others
This famous tale appears in both the kabuki and Noh repertoires. Minamoto Yoshitsune, fleeing, takes a boat on the Seto Inland Sea. When he encounters the ghost of his enemy, Taira General Tomomori, they have a fierce fight.

III. Han Han Kyogen Monogatari: a shinnai story with puppets
Performers: Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI; Nishikawa Koryu, head of the Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo puppet troupe; and others
This humorous contemporary work in shinnai style tells about the adventures and misadventures of a kyogen performer Hansai and his mistress O-Han.

In the play, Tsuruhachi is a professional shinnai narrator/singer, and Tsurujiro is his shamisen accompanist. The story has to do with their relationship.

On Sunday, November 30, 2016, at the National Theatre, I will hold a special concert in honor of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Tsuruga Wakasanojo I.

The purpose of the concert is to express my appreciation to Tsuruga Wakasanojo I for his many masterpieces that are still being performed, including Rancho and Akegarasu Yume no Awayuki.

At that event, I am planning to announce that my student, Tsuruga Isekichi, will become the iemoto of the Bunke branch of the Tsuruga school of shinnai.

Special Shinnai Performance at Okunitama Shrine Summer Plum Festival

The shrine is 5 minutes’ walk from either of the following stations:
Fuchu station, Keio line, Or
JR Fuchu Honmachi station, Nambu line
Fuchu station is approximately 25 minutes by train from Shinjuku station.
Fuchu Honmachi is approximately 45 minutes by train from Kawasaki.

Okunitama Shrine is an ancient historic shrine, said to have been founded in 111 A.D.
Every year, on July 20, the shrine holds a traditional summer festival, the Sumomo (plum) Festival. About 70,000 people are expected to participate.

Shinnai Performance:
Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI is the featured performer at this year’s festival. His performance will start at 6 p.m.

Other Festival Events:
The festival will be held all day, starting at 8 a.m.
Special folding fans (sensu) and flat fans (uchiwa) with a crow pictured on them are available to those who attend that day from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. Crows are believed to ward off evil.
A Shinto dance with music will be performed several times during the day.
There will be 120 street vendors selling plums as well as typical festival food. The street vendors will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Fifth Concert by the Shinnai Wakagi Kai: Tsuruga Isekichi and Her Students

Although not many people are familiar with Edo period shinnai narrative song (joururi), some people are studying it even so. We are happy to present this concert, which is the fifth performance by students of the Shinnai Wakagi Kai Classroom. Even though all the performers are busy working people, they've practiced shinnai very hard. This performance will show you the results of their efforts.

And can you imagine!! The special guest is Shinpuu'tei Ichinosuke, a famous rakugo performer, who is No. 1 among young rakugo performers. Since he was promoted to shin'uchi, which is a top rank in rakugo, he has been much in demand as a performer. This is the second time that he has performed at a Wakagi Kai concert.

Shinnai fans! People who aren't shinnai fans! Rakugo fans! By all means, come to this event. We are waiting for you.

Access by subway: The National Theatre is 5 minutes' walk from the Hanzomon Station on the Hanzomon Line, or 10 minutes' walk from the Nagatacho Station on the Yurakucho, Hanzomon, and Nanboku lines.

Starting at 11 a.m., many dance numbers will be performed with various kinds of traditional music, including naga'uta, tokiwazu, kiyomoto, and gidayu.

The final work in the program is a new composition by Tsuruga Wakasanojo, Daruma-san, using a text by Yashiro Inosuke. Wakasanojo composed this work in response to requests for new shinnai works that even children could enjoy.

Traditional Japanese Music Performance at the National Theatre

A concert celebrating Japanese traditional music. There will be two concerts: one will present works for the koto, and the other, shinnai works.
The shinnai concert starts at 3 p.m.

There will be five shinnai works performed.

Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI will perform the final number in the shinnai concert, accompanied on the shamisen by Shinnai Nakasaburo (Living National Treasure) and Tsuruga Isejiro. The work he will perform is "Sakura Sogoro". The portion of that long work that he will perform is "Ko Wakare", in which Sogoro bids farewell to his children.

Place: Kagurazaka Theater (second floor of Ushigome Tansu Kumin Hall).

Access: 1 minute walk from Exit A1 of the Ushigome Kagurazaka station on the Oedo line. When you exit from the ticket gates, turn right. At the street level, turn right, and you will be next to the entrance of the building where the concert will be held.

The program includes naga'uta, kiyomoto (2 numbers), and shinnai.
The shinnai work is Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI's recent setting of "The
Spider's Thread". It is based on a short story by that title by the
famous Japanese short-story writer, Ryunosuke Akutagawa. The performance
includes Japanese drums and traditional dance, as well as shinnai.

Shinnai Concert on June 5 at Kioi Hall (small hall)

A concert of classical shinnai works by two of the most famous early shinnai joururi performers, Tsuruga Wakasanojo I and Fujimatsu Rochu, will be held on June 5.

The concert is in two parts. The works in Part I are by Fujimatsu Rochu, and in Part II, by Tsuruga Wakasanojo I.

The performers will be the iemoto of various schools of shinnai.

Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI will perform the final number in Part II, accompanied on the shamisen by Shinnai Nakasaburo (Living National Treasure) and Tsuruga Isejiro.

Date: Sunday, June 5, 2011
First part starts at 1 p.m. (doors open at 12:30 p.m.).
Second part starts at 4 p.m. (doors open at 3:30 p.m.).

Tickets are 5,000 yen.
Seats are not reserved.

Kioi Hall is across the street from the New Otani Hotel.

Mochizuki Bokusei V Concert & Name-Changing Ceremony, March 28

望月1.JPG望月2.JPGOne of the artists who performed in last year's "Kobushi Group Concert", Mochizuki Bokusei, will hold a concert to celebrate his becoming Mochizuki Bokusei V.

Date: March 28, 2011
First part starts at 10:45 a.m.
Second part starts at 4 p.m.

Tsuruga Wakasanojo will perform the first work in the second part, a celebratory shinnai work called Kodakara Sanbaso.

Incidentally, that number will also be Tsuruga Isejiro's stage debut on the drums.
